Matzleinsdorfer Hochhaus: SPÖ honors Erwin Lanc with a name change!

The Matzleinsdorfer Hochhaus in Vienna is about to undergo a significant renaming. In the future it will be called “Erwin-Lanc-Hof” to pay homage to the late SPÖ politician Erwin Lanc. This decision was made at the most recent meeting of the Margareten district council, where the SPÖ's proposal was accepted by a majority, despite concerns from the Greens and Neos as well as a voice from the KPÖ/Left, who spoke out against the renaming. The deputy district leader Christoph Lipinski from the SPÖ supported the name change.

Erwin Lanc was a defining figure in Austrian politics. Born on May 17, 1930 in Vienna, he lived an eventful life as a bank employee and politician in the Austrian Social Democratic Party. From 1960 to 1983 he held various ministerial positions, including Minister for Transport, Interior and Foreign Affairs. He was also President of the UN Convention Against Torture and a member of the Margareten SPÖ. After he died on March 29, 2025, his life's work will now be honored by renaming the high-rise.

Criticism of the naming

However, the decision also attracted critical voices. The Green Party representative Lena Nanut demanded that female personalities should also be taken into account in such naming. She suggested Rosa Janku, a resistance fighter from the Nazi era, as an alternative. The debate about gender equality and the visibility of women in street naming is a growing topic in city politics.

The Matzleinsdorf high-rise at Leopold-Rister-Gasse 5 is the first high-rise in the community and thus becomes a symbol of the memory of Erwin Lanc. The renaming will now be forwarded to the relevant municipal departments, where the final steps for implementation will be taken. The aim of this measure is not only to do justice to the memory of Lanc, but also to strengthen local identity and keep the history of the district alive.

How the discussion about naming will develop in the future remains to be seen. What is certain, however, is that Erwin Lanc's legacy has left a lasting impression on Viennese politics and his achievements are recognized in this way.
