Solemn swearing in: New Leopoldstadt district council in office!
On Tuesday, June 3, 2025, the newly elected Leopoldstadt district council was ceremoniously sworn in at the Lessinggasse school center. A total of 60 district councilors took their vows during the inaugural meeting to take on their new tasks in Vienna's second district. Housing and Women's Councilor Kathrin Gaál (SPÖ) carried out the swearing-in and highlighted the relevant role of the district council as an important local contact. She praised the developments in the North Station area, where not only affordable housing but also important educational infrastructure such as the Christine Nöstlinger Campus were created.
The director of the school center, Roman Graf, was pleased to once again host this important meeting. “Political education has a high priority at our school,” he emphasized, making it clear how important it is to include young people in political discourse. The swearing-in was a symbolic highlight intended to strengthen citizens' trust in their elected representatives.
The new faces in the district council
A key result of this meeting was the confirmation of Alexander Nikolai as district leader. Nikolai, who has been in office since 2020, can look back on a long-standing political career. He is not only the district party chairman of the SPÖ in Leopoldstadt, but is also actively involved in various working groups and committees. He thanked those present for their trust and emphasized that Leopoldstadt is a colorful, diverse and dynamic district that needs to be continuously supported and strengthened.
- Bezirksvorsteher: Alexander Nikolai (SPÖ)
- Stellvertreter: Christoph Zich (SPÖ) und Bernhard Seitz (Grüne)
But Nikolai's debut wasn't just about words. Furthermore, this occurred in a political context shaped by the recent election. The Vienna elections, which take place every five years, ensure that the district representatives are directly legitimized by the citizens. From the age of 16, all Austrian citizens and EU citizens with their main residence in Vienna are allowed to vote, which promotes diversity and expression of opinion österreich.gv.at.
A look into the future
With regard to the challenges ahead, Nikolai emphasized the need for joint efforts to best represent the concerns of Leopoldstadt's citizens. Both the economic and social aspects of the district are in focus. The politics of the last few years are already showing successes, which were made possible thanks to the committed work of all mandates.
The swearing in of the new district representative is just the first step in an exciting and busy legislative period. You will have to grow with the challenges, but with a strong team around Nikolai, Leopoldstadt is well positioned. It remains to be seen which initiatives and projects will attract the attention of the district council next. The commitment to a livable district will continue to be very important.
