Burnt cars in Walter Kuhn Park: City takes action!
On Wednesday, October 1st, the City of Vienna's Immediate Measures group sent an important signal in the area around Walter Kuhn Park. Several burnt and damaged cars were removed after a media tip drew attention to the desolate situation. In the area, which has already been discussed several times in the media, a dangerous situation due to traces of oil and cigarette butts was evident. Walter Hillerer, head of the immediate measures group, announced that further operations to eliminate such danger spots will follow.
The Walter Kuhn Park, which opened in September 2023, is part of the planned large-scale “Neues Landgut” project, where up to 1,500 new apartments are to be built. The project was deemed necessary because the currently vacant area is increasingly being exploited by unknown groups. In addition, the Favoriten district administration has intensified exchanges with various authorities, including the police and social work, in order to actively address the conflict situation around the park.
A new district is emerging
The Walter Kuhn Park itself already offers games and sports as well as relaxing ways to cool off. In the future, the green area will be enriched by the creation of a “climate forest” in the northern area, which includes 166 new trees and a 2,500 square meter flower meadow. From July 10, 2024, visitors can also expect a spacious meadow area and cozy hammocks for relaxing hours outdoors.
With 260 square meters of grass and herbaceous beds that promote the native habitat, as well as a 2,200 square meter multifunctional meadow area for exercise and relaxation, the park becomes an attractive center for many Viennese. The leisure options also include a children's playground with various attractions, two ball courts for basketball and football and various fitness stations.
Climate-friendly urban development
The current developments in Vienna are in the context of an increasing urban challenge, which is further exacerbated by climate change. The need for climate-friendly construction and the creation of sustainable living spaces is becoming increasingly relevant, especially with regard to the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement. This will not only increase the quality of life in the city, but also significantly reduce the energy consumption of our buildings by 2050, as the German Development Cooperation emphasizes.
A harmonious coexistence of nature and urban life, supported by nature-based solutions, is considered essential. This also includes green and water areas as well as sponge city concepts that ensure that cities become more resilient to climate challenges while improving air and urban quality.
Until the planned residential complex in the “Neues Landgut” is completed, which should be the end of 2027 at the earliest, it is important that control by the authorities is increased in order to improve the current situation and ensure greater safety in the neighborhood.
