Tigerpark Open: Table tennis festival makes Josefstadt shake!

The eagerly awaited major table tennis event “Tigerpark Open” took place today in the Tigerpark in Vienna’s 8th district. Organized by the club Umdi table tennis culture, amateurs and professionals gathered for a varied competition, which, however, offered much more than just sporting ambition.

Almost a hundred spectators of all ages did not miss the spectacle. Equipped with camping chairs, they cheered wildly on the players, clapping and shouting heckling while the smell of heated asphalt and sweat hung in the air. From sporty dresses to vintage fashion to everyday wear, there was something for everyone. The warm fan banners with the players' names and loving hearts created a unique atmosphere that lightened the seriousness of the competition and focused on the joy of the game.

Table tennis as a bridge between cultures

The “Umdi Tischtenniskultur” association has set itself the task of promoting table tennis as a meeting place. “The idea came about in 2021 and was founded in 2023 by Sophia Widman and Paul Spindler,” says a member of the association. Your goal? Bringing people from different backgrounds together. With over 30 active members and more than 100 regular participants, the concept has already proven itself. In addition to the “Tigerpark Open”, the club is also known for regular match days in parks such as Yppenplatz and “Garage Grande”.

“We call the open match days that we offer every Wednesday ‘cut week’. We have also created special match days on Mondays for Flinta people,” explains a club representative. This low-threshold offer warmly welcomes all participants regardless of ability, origin or gender. The inclusive approach is particularly evident during the Vienna Championships, in which the club will take part in autumn 2023.

A competition with heart

The “Tigerpark Open” has now established itself as a fixture in the seasonal calendar and the coveted “Wandertiger Cup” is awarded as part of this event. The event perfectly reflects the togetherness and the participatory club structure in which the members are actively involved. It is events like this that not only promote sporting competition, but also community and show that table tennis is more than just a game. It's a way of life.
