Sherlock Holmes returns: Latest premiere at the Kammerspiele!

The Josefstadt Kammerspiele is currently hosting the German-language premiere of Ken Ludwig's suspense-filled play “Sherlock Holmes: The Moriarty Case”. From now until June 23, 2026, theater lovers can look forward to a captivating mix of excitement, humor and theatrical art. A real treat for all crime fans!

At the center of the plot is the infamous duel between Sherlock Holmes, played by Claudius von Stolzmann, and his arch-enemy Professor James Moriarty. The eerie story that shakes London revolves around a series of gruesome murders orchestrated by Moriarty that Holmes must solve. Next to him is Martin Niedermair in the role of Dr. Watson takes a central role, while Kimberly Rydell shines as Irene Adler and Markus Kofler in several roles, including Moriarty and Holmes' brother Mycroft. A total of five actors provide the lively portrayal of 38 different characters, which makes the piece particularly varied.

Director Dominic Oley brings out the humorous elements of the piece with a clever mix of classic detective art and fast-paced scene changes. Ken Ludwig, known for his comedic works, manages to reinterpret the spirit of Sherlock Holmes while maintaining the tension of the classic stories. The Kammerspiele have shown a good knack for bringing this production to the stage.

The popularity of Sherlock Holmes is not new. The character has appeared in literature and through various media, such as BBC series “Sherlock”, which ran from 2010 to 2017, achieved cult status. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman as Dr. John Watson, this series brought a breath of fresh air to the portrayal of the classic detective. Although the first and second seasons were highly praised, the fourth season received mixed reviews, leading audiences to question the quality of the later episodes.

The film adaptation and modern telling of the Sherlock Holmes stories that appear in the IMDB has helped revitalize interest in Arthur Conan Doyle's original stories. The characters blossom in a new light and the audience is drawn into a modern world that still retains the charm of the original.
