Vienna starts getting out of gas: advice for climate-friendly heating!

Vienna faces an ambitious goal: the city should become climate neutral by 2040. An essential step on this path is the “Out of Gas” program, which has been in place since MyDistrict has attracted attention beyond the city limits. The program promotes the switch to environmentally friendly energy and offers interested residents low-threshold advice on phasing out gas.

In May 2025, a pilot project called “Get out of gas locally” was started at Amerlingstrasse 11 in Mariahilf, which is specifically aimed at converting the heating system and thermal renovation. This contact point offers personal advice in which citizens can clarify questions about switching from fossil heating systems to renewable energies. Already 75 initial contacts with the advice center demonstrate the interest of the population, especially since around 60 of these inquiries come from the Mariahilf district.

Advice in the neighborhood

The weekly consultation hours, in which experts from the urban renewal area management and Hauskunft Wien are available, are particularly in demand. Climate City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky emphasized the relevance of individual advice on technical and financial aspects. He is convinced that well-founded information is essential to make the transition easier for citizens. Vice Mayor Kathrin Gaál is also aware of the importance of citizen participation in the heating transition.

The advice center's offerings include not only personal discussions, but also various formats such as guided walks to district heating projects and information evenings in local pubs, where the topic of environmentally friendly heat supply is discussed in more depth. These measures help to raise the population's awareness of the need to switch and at the same time stimulate interest in sustainable heating systems.

The pioneering area of Gumpendorfer Straße

A central aspect of the climate-friendly heating transition in Vienna is the Gumpendorfer Straße district heating pioneer area. Wien Energie has already begun nationwide expansion here. Loud Housing advice Vienna Construction work has started in the first phase between the Getreidemarkt and the House of the Sea. Through these measures, the municipality aims to enable heating, hot water and cooking without CO2 emissions in 2040.

In order to achieve the ambitious climate goals, a redesign of the heat supply is essential. Loud ENGIE Germany District heating plays a key role because it is generated from combined heat and power and renewable energies. This not only ensures an effective energy supply, but also a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. For example, such a switch could reduce CO2 emissions in Germany by at least 55% by 2030.

Overall, the switch to renewable energy sources in Vienna is a question of the future. Anyone who would like to find out about the options for phasing out gas can visit the advice center at Amerlingstrasse 11 on Tuesdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Free consultation appointments can be booked online here, and a new online assistant offers support for phasing out gas.

The next steps are now clearly on the table: Vienna is working together to become climate neutral by 2040. Every personal contribution counts. The advisory services are a good start to a more environmentally friendly future.
