Shock attack in the ICE: Syrian violates passengers with a hammer and ax!
In a terrifying incident in the ICE from Hamburg to Vienna, a 20-year-old Syrian attacked several passengers on July 4, 2025 with a hammer and an ax. The train, which had around 500 passengers on board, kept near Straßkirchen in Lower Bavaria. A total of five people were injured, including the attacker himself, who was then overwhelmed by a passenger. The police then arrested him. According to KStA, there is no evidence of an extremist background or a specific motive for the attack.
Among the injured were a Syrian woman, her son and two other men aged 24 and 51. It remains particularly unclear whether the attacker and his victims have known themselves; He had previously spoken to them. The MAN is a recognized refugee with a residence permit in Austria and was therefore legally on the train. Bavarian investigative authorities work closely with Austrian bodies to comprehensively clarify the incident. So far, the attacker in Bavaria has not been striking, as the police report.
emergency measures and reactions
After the attack, the passengers had to be brought to the next train station in Straßkirchen, where a care center was set up to support the traumatized passengers. The Bavarian Red Cross was used with rescue workers, helicopters and psychosocial emergency care. The alarm received around 2 p.m. after passengers pulled the emergency brake. Deutsche Bahn showed compassion for the victims and thanked the emergency services for their quick reaction to the incident.
violent crime in focus
Such incidents also highlight the problem of violent crime in Germany. According to Statista, violent crimes make up less than 4% of all police crimes, but they influence people's feeling of security significantly more than theft or fraud. The number of acts of violence has increased again since 2021 after a decline during pandemic. In 2024, around 217,000 violent crimes were registered, the highest number since 2007.
It should also be noted that almost a third of the suspects are under 21 years old. The causes of this increase could be economic uncertainties, social stress and psychological stress by the Corona measures. This is listed by experts as an explanatory approach for increasing violence. SPIEGEL emphasizes that society worrying development reacts; 94% of Germans feel violence and aggression against people in public offices as a big problem.
