Vienna in traffic chaos: massive construction sites bring the ÖBB and subway to a standstill!

The summer months in Vienna not only bring sunny days, but also a number of construction sites affecting the public transport network. From June 28th to September 1st, the main express railway line between Praterstern and Floridsdorf will be affected. There will be no trains on this important route during this time, which means a real change for many commuters and travelers. The work is part of a multi-year renovation program that is scheduled to be completed by December 2027. The aim here is to increase the frequency of trains and to enable closer intervals through the city, as Kurier reports.

In order to minimize inconvenience for passengers, a replacement service will be put in place. Direct buses run between Praterstern and Floridsdorf and various diversions via Traisengasse and Handelskai are also offered. In addition, restrictions on the U4 must be observed: The route between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke and between Heiligenstadt and Friedensbrücke is also partially closed. The 120-year-old tunnel infrastructure is being renovated here, which will benefit passengers in the long term.

Regional track work and new tram lines

But it doesn't stop with these main closures. There is also track work on the Kärntner Ring, Schubertring and Universitätsring, which will affect some tram lines such as D, 1, 2 and 71. The lines are therefore shortened or rerouted. But don't panic! The Wiener Linien have come up with a lot of ideas to get passengers safely to their destination. Transfer options include tram line E4 and the rerouted line D from Nußdorf to Schottenring.

Further track work is also taking place in districts such as Schlachthausgasse, Rennweg and Jörgerstrasse. In the fall, new tram lines 12 and 27 will be added to take the traffic volume into account. Particularly exciting: Construction work on extending line 18 to the stadium began in June and will further improve the connections.

Keep passengers informed

The ÖBB has also announced important changes: There will be restrictions on the southern line between Mödling and Leobersdorf and between Wiener Neustadt, which will also take effect from June 28th to September 1st. In some cases, replacement rail services are also being set up here. In particular, the CJX connections from Wiener Neustadt will be rerouted, with stops in Baden eliminated between June 28th and August 8th.

In addition, travelers have to prepare for a complete cessation of train traffic between Fischamend and Wolfsthal on the first weekend from Vienna Airport, where a replacement rail service will also be set up. There will also be restrictions on other routes, such as between Mistelbach and Laa an der Thaya and between Deutsch Wagram and Gänserndorf, as in some cases only single-track operation is possible.

The Wiener Linien strongly advises all passengers to find out about the current situation before starting their journey in order to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Especially in these hot summer months, when many are looking for relaxation and leisure, it is advisable to be prepared. With a little planning, this construction work can also be seen as an opportunity to enjoy the new, modernized infrastructure!
