Traffic opening in Vienna: U4 and S-Bahn start regularly from September!
Viennese commuters can breathe a sigh of relief! From September 1, 2023, regular traffic on the S-Bahn main line between Praterstern and Floridsdorf will be restored, reports The press. The U4 will also run continuously along the entire route from Monday, September 1st, after the closure between Friedensbrücke and Schottenring has been lifted. The temporary replacement tram lines E4 and the D-car are therefore no longer necessary.
The current construction work on the ring has also been completed, which means that tram lines 1, 2, 71 and the D-car can run regularly again. In particular, the renovation of the tracks on Jörgerstrasse has now been completed, so that lines 9 and 43 are back in service as usual. Bus line 13A will also return to the Alser Straße/Skodagasse terminus from September 1st.
Future restrictions
The track system of tram line 49 will be replaced during the autumn holidays in the Hütteldorf/Bujattigasse area, so that the 49er will only run between the Ring, Volkstheater and Baumgarten. These measures are part of a comprehensive modernization strategy that not only focuses on renewing the infrastructure, but also aims to improve future traffic flow in Vienna Vienna lines emphasize.
Investments for the future
These investments are urgently needed and will indeed bring long-term improvements for passengers. Extensive construction work is therefore planned for summer 2025. The S-Bahn main line between Vienna Meidling and Floridsdorf is being modernized under the “S-Bahn Vienna Upgrade” program. This includes the extension of platforms and the renewal of buildings and supporting structures. The aim is to ensure the regular running of trains in the future by implementing the digital train control system ETCS, such as ÖBB communicate.
These modernizations will also require route closures during the 2025 summer holidays. However, passengers can rely on two newly established replacement bus lines: The yellow direct bus will run between Vienna Praterstern and Vienna Floridsdorf without stopping, while the blue line will serve additional stops.
There is a lot going on in the city of Vienna! Wiener Linien and ÖBB work hand in hand to bring the infrastructure into shape and ensure the quality of public transport in the long term. It remains exciting to see what the next few months will bring - especially for everyone who relies on public transport!
