Rapids on e-scooters: up to 60 km/h in Vienna-police are alarm!
Floridsdorf, Österreich - In the 21st district of Vienna, police officers recently performed particularly vehemently against the increased traffic violations of e-scooter drivers. During a comprehensive traffic center campaign by the Floridsdorf city police command and the state transport department, solo artists were spotted under the e-scooter users who were traveling at speeds of up to 60 km/h-and thus far above the permissible limit of 25 km/h. A total of over 50 advertisements were issued for these violations and more than 40 organ mandates were issued, as today reported.
The fact that both an e-scooter driver and an e-cyclist were under the influence of addictive substances and were pulled out of circulation is particularly alarming. These incidents are part of a major problem that the City of Vienna has been concerned with for years: the increasing number of traffic accidents and violations in connection with e -scooters. Federal police director Michael Takács and Thomas Losko, head of the Vienna State Transport Department, presented a new traffic safety strategy under the motto "Vienna rolls safely". The campaign, which was launched in June 2025, is intended to promote targeted information and increased controls for safer on e-scooters, as the Federal Ministry of the Interior explains.
Alarming Stats
The numbers speak for themselves: Since the introduction of e-scooters in 2018, use has risen enormously, especially during corona pandemic. In recent years, however, the number of accidents and traffic violations has increased suddenly. Between 2021 and 2024 there was an increase in organ mandate by 58%, while the ads increased by 170%. In addition, 140% of the injuries for e-scooter accidents have risen by alarming. In 2024 there were two deaths and almost 400 injuries. Particularly worrying is the increase in the violations of alcohol and drug influence, which has more than tripled, according to the [Board of Trustees for Road Safety] (https://www.kfv.at/alarmierendendendesendende-bbei-e---scooter-und-e- and-ein-verfuenffachung-der-winden/).
The greatest danger threatens to drove alcoholized drivers: 12% of e-scooter steering people were alcoholic at the time of the accident. The alcohol limit for e-scooters and bicycles is 0.8 per thousand, but many significantly exceed this limit. Around 90% of alcoholized drivers had over 1.0 per thousand in their blood, which also tightened the security situation.
an appeal for responsibility
The currently high risk of accidents is not least due to "souped-up" e-scooter. In addition to targeted information, the new “Vienna rolls safely” campaign also enables the issue of information materials directly for traffic controls. These materials convey basic security information and the most important traffic rules. In addition, a clear appeal is addressed to all road users: take responsibility, pay attention to each other and adhere to the rules.
The most common violations include driving on walking stands, taking several people with you and disregarding light signals or one -way streets. Parents of children under the age of 12 are also obliged to equip their offspring with a bicycle helmet. All of these measures are essential to maintain safety in road traffic and to reduce the number of e-scooter accidents.
The topic remains up to date and continues to be explosive due to the steady increase in e-scooter use. The Viennese authorities are working to increase the level of safety with targeted campaigns and strict controls and to make e-scooter traffic more secure in the city.
