Prices are rising: barbecue areas on the Danube Island will soon cost 45 euros!

The Danube Island is not only a popular place to relax, but also a barbecue stronghold for many Viennese. According to a recent report by the courier the city auditor's office reviewed the fees for reserving barbecue areas on the popular island. The result shows that the current fee of 10 euros only covers around 24 percent of the actual costs. This will change drastically from January 2026: The City of Vienna is planning an increase to 45 euros per reservation with the aim of covering the necessary expenses for cleaning, maintenance and administration and promoting responsible use.

This measure does not come as a surprise, as the response from the population to the barbecue areas on the Danube Island is consistently positive. In recent years, the public barbecue culture, which began in the 1980s, has become increasingly important. From April to October, Vienna actually turns into a barbecue hotbed, and with 15 reservable barbecue areas on the Danube Island, the city offers a wide range of options for barbecue fans.

Rules and reservation

If you want to use one of the barbecue areas, you will have to be prepared for higher costs in the future. Booking remains possible online; this has been the case since 2008. As the Regional page reported, the use of the barbecue zones remains free for all Viennese as long as you follow the rules. These include, among other things, that the barbecue areas must be left clean and barbecues in public parks are permitted until 9 p.m.

The barbecue areas are particularly popular in summer. Visitors can not only bring their own grills, but also benefit from permanently installed grills and seating. In order to ensure a peaceful atmosphere, the barbecue area supervisor ensures compliance with the regulations. But the quiet times from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. must be respected and safety measures must also be observed.

Despite all the anticipation for the coming barbecue season, we should also pay attention to environmentally conscious grilling. This includes the use of biodegradable products and proper waste disposal. Grilling is often forbidden, especially in times of drought or in nature reserves, which underlines the importance of your own behavior.

The increase in reservation fees illustrates the City of Vienna's efforts to make the infrastructure around the barbecue areas sustainable. In a city where grilling is not just a hobby but part of the quality of life, it remains to be seen how the population will react to the new regulations. One thing is already clear: Vienna will continue to be a place for barbecue lovers in the future.
