Massive U4 closure until September: New options for Viennese passengers!

The people of Vienna will have to prepare for extensive traffic disruptions in local public transport in the coming weeks. From today, June 30, 2025, both the U4 and important S-Bahn routes will be closed due to extensive renovation and modernization work. These measures are part of a larger program to improve rail infrastructure and are expected to last until September 1st. The press reports that the U4 will not run between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke during this period.

On the S-Bahn, passengers cannot travel between Praterstern and Floridsdorf. However, a replacement rail service has been set up for them, which ensures the connection through a yellow direct bus between these two points without intermediate stops. There is also a blue bus that serves all stops along the route. This is intended to enable passengers to circumvent the restrictions as comfortably as possible.

Extensive modernization work

The closures are part of a large-scale renovation project carried out by Wiener Linien and primarily affects the U4. This route is over 120 years old, which is why work on the tunnel infrastructure and other areas is extremely urgent. The modernizations include, among other things, the extension of the platforms and the renewal of buildings and supporting structures, such as wienerlinien.at can be read.

The track work associated with this campaign is also taking place on numerous tram lines in the districts. From August 8th, for example, tracks on Schloßhofer Straße will be renewed. This work also takes place during ongoing operations, which challenges the flexibility of local transport. In addition, tracks on Kärntner Ring, Universitätsring and Schubertring will be replaced in the city center.

Alternative means of transport and increased frequency

If passengers would like to use alternative transport routes, various options are available. The tram lines E4 (Nußdorf–Schottenring) and bus line 6E (Westbahnhof-Eichenstraße) offer additional capacity. In addition, other lines in the vicinity of the construction sites will be increased, meaning that the U2 and U4 will run every 5 minutes during the summer holidays. The U1 is even offered every 3 minutes, which ensures complete convenience.

Wiener Linien also announces network expansion. New tram lines 12 and 27 will go into operation from autumn. These will link districts 8, 9, 20 and 2 and thus offer better connections to the subway. This shows that, despite the current closures, there are significant improvements in the public transport network in prospect, as also stated in the article by vienna.at is to be read.

Travelers are asked to plan their trips using the WienMobil app and to find out about current construction site information on the Wiener Linien website. Even if the closures initially seem inconvenient, the city is working to comprehensively modernize local transport and make it future-proof.
