ÖFB Cup: Altach celebrates a landslide win against Dornbirn – a dream start!
There is great anticipation for the ÖFB Cup in Austria. The ball will roll in the first round in just over five weeks, from July 25th to 27th. With a total of seven Ländle clubs, including Bundesliga club SCR Altach, it will be exciting to see how the local teams fare. It will not only be interesting to see whether the clubs can forget their last cup defeat, but also how they fare against the sometimes unknown opponents from the lower leagues.
Last year was a rather mixed year for the teams from Vorarlberg in the ÖFB Cup. Only SW Bregenz and Austria Lustenau made it to the second round, while Altach failed against Donaufeld last year. Neo sports coordinator Eric Orie left no doubt in a recent statement that the game against SV Hirschwang from the 2nd Regional League East is a must for Altach. “We have to win the game,” Orie said firmly.
The games of the first round
The first encounters of the cup promise some interesting duels. Here are the pairings from the first round at a glance:
- SV Hirschwang – SCR Altach
- UVB Vöcklamarkt – SW Bregenz
- SV Kuchl – Austria Lustenau
- FC Dornbirn – GAK
- SVG Reichenau – VfB Hohenems
- FC Pinzgau – SC Röthis
- FC Lauterach – SC Schwaz
The match between FC Dornbirn and GAK will be particularly exciting, the most difficult but also most attractive draw for Vorarlberg. The Dornbirn team will do everything in its power to trip up the favorite.
The starting position of the Vorarlbergers
The starting position looks different for the remaining Vorarlberg teams. While the ambitious second division teams Bregenz and Lustenau have to compete against regional league teams, the western league teams such as Hohenems, Lauterach and Röthis have more manageable tasks. Hohenems meets Reichenau and Lauterach has to play against SC Schwaz. Only Röthis is required against FC Pinzgau.
On June 20, 2025, the question remains whether the Ländle clubs have learned from last year's disillusionment. A good hand is required, and perhaps the ÖFB Cup will bring one or two football dreams back onto the pitch. SCR Altach could experience the challenge almost like a competitive game - the positive voices in the team can be clearly heard, and the return of Andreas Lienhart and Jan Zwischenbrugger after injury breaks gives the team an additional boost.
The ÖFB Cup adventure is just around the corner and Austrian football fans can look forward to exciting games. It remains to be hoped that the Vorarlberg teams will aim higher than last year and that one or two football dwarfs from the lower league will be turned upside down.
