Major track renewal in 2026: Improvements for Vienna's tram traffic!

Wiener Linien will continue to face major challenges and changes in the coming year. For many passengers, 2026 will be a year of renewal, especially on Donaufelder Straße. Comprehensive track renovations are planned here, which are intended to significantly improve the driving comfort of lines 25, 26 and 27. As early as 2025, work was underway on Franz-Jonas-Platz as well as on Schloßhofer Straße and Heiligenstädter Straße without any significant restrictions, which gives a foretaste of the projects to come. According to a report from DFZ, the track renewal in 2026 will include 12.5 kilometers of tram tracks and 33 BIM switches. In addition, a new route of 3.1 kilometers with seven new stops will be opened from the U3 station Schlachthausgasse.

The planned extension of line 18 to the stadium represents another important step in transport connections. This line will not only serve as an alternative during the S-Bahn main line closure, but will also significantly improve the connection between the 2nd and 3rd districts. There is also extensive modernization work on the subway networks: the U4 will receive a new track between Landstrasse and Schwedenplatz, while the U3 and U6 will also be brought up to date.

Investments in the future

In total, Wiener Linien will invest a total of 324 million euros in modernizing its infrastructure in 2026. They handle around 100 construction sites every year, with only a quarter of the construction sites having an impact on traffic. In order to cushion this effort as best as possible, the intervals between the lines in the construction site area will be condensed during the work, larger vehicles will be used and alternative routes will be offered. This means that passengers can count on a dense network even during the renovation phases, accompanied by offers such as WienMobil Rad, which are particularly strengthened in such times.

The positive developments of the past few years make us optimistic. In 2024, Wiener Linien recorded a record number of regular customers. Passenger numbers rose to 873 million - that's almost 2.4 million passengers per day, which corresponds to an increase of 6.8 percent compared to 2023. This is no coincidence, because with a total of 909 million euros that will flow into the expansion and modernization of public transport in 2025, the public transport system in Vienna will continue to be maintained at a high level in the future.

Environmentally friendly future and mobility

In order to achieve the upcoming climate goals by 2040, the city is also relying on the latest technology. A special highlight will be the introduction of hydrogen buses; the first projects are already planned for 2025. These steps are part of the “Netz est!” modernization offensive, which aims not only to renew tracks and switches, but also to improve the quality of life of Viennese people.

The “Liftboy” app is also a modern solution for convenient use of elevators in the subway network. All of these measures are not only a sign of progress, but also ensure that Vienna remains an attractive and easily accessible city for future generations.
