An exciting race for the VCÖ Mobility Prize has begun! With a remarkable number of 13 projects from Vienna, the capital and its creative minds are well represented this year. meinkreis.at reports that a total of 363 projects from all over Austria were submitted in 13 categories. This year's motto “Future fit for cities and rural areas” characterizes the competition, which focuses on environmentally friendly mobility and sustainable freight transport.
The expert jury has selected the best five projects in each category, which are now available for online voting. You can vote until Sunday, July 20th. The projects cover a wide spectrum and show how diverse the approaches to improving mobility in cities are.
Diverse projects from Viennese people
Particularly noteworthy is the project that draws attention to the challenges faced by people with impaired vision, nominated in the “Concepts” category. In addition, 23 students from the Vienna University of Technology transformed a busy thoroughfare into a temporary pedestrian zone. Another exciting project is the “Auto-Wette” from Währing, which was nominated in the “Sharing” category. This is about going without a car for three months!
In the “Active Mobility – Walking and Cycling” category, the City of Vienna’s cycle path offensive is up for election, while the landscape architecture firm “3:0 Landschaftsarchitektur” is nominated for the redesign of Praterstrasse. These projects make a significant contribution to more environmentally friendly city planning and are a real benefit to the quality of life in Vienna.
A look into the future of mobility
The VCÖ Mobility Prize is not just a competition, but also an important contribution to the mobility transition in Austria. As vcoe.at notes, the focus this year is on sustainable improvements in mobility. The 2025 competition also promises a lot of excitement, in which a wide range of categories such as active mobility, digitalization and traffic safety will be considered.
Not only cities and municipalities are eligible to participate, but also companies and initiatives that develop innovative approaches to promote environmentally friendly mobility. We are excited to see how the expert jury will evaluate the submitted projects in June and which of the best ideas will be honored in September at the Odeon Theater in Vienna.
