Tradition meets modernity: Meixner's restaurant shines again!

In a small but beautiful part of Vienna, more precisely at Buchengasse 64, traditional gastronomy has received a breath of fresh air with the takeover of “Meixners Gastwirtschaft” by Janette and Alexander Civic. The two have been welcoming guests since December 2022, combining their passion for Viennese cuisine with their gastronomic know-how.

“Meixners Gastwirtschaft” is not just a restaurant, but a place where tradition and culture are maintained. Viennese cuisine has been served here since 1981 and that is also the aim that the new host couple is pursuing. “We want to preserve tradition and culture for all generations,” explains Alexander Civic. The goal is clear: to create a beautiful ambience, good food and stimulating conversations, in the spirit of Viennese tavern culture, which is known as a meeting place, as wien.info emphasizes.

Cheers to Viennese cuisine

The menu is a veritable land of milk and honey for lovers of Viennese cuisine. Classics such as beef tartare, baked gram dumplings or creamed veal heart are available to enjoy and are already a hit among guests. The main courses, which cost between 17.90 and 32.40 euros, reflect the opportunity to interpret traditional tastes in a modern way. And that’s not just an empty phrase: “We use seasonal, regional ingredients,” assures Janette.

A special treat is the cozy parlor, which offers space for up to 25 people for special occasions. It can be used separately from the other rooms, ideal for celebrations or small gatherings. Guests who love Viennese coziness have come to the right place.

Viennese hospitality up close

“We have both gained a lot of experience in the catering industry,” say the Civics, with Janette able to point to her time in renowned restaurants such as “fabio’s” and “Le Loft”, while Alexander gained valuable knowledge as part of the team at “Eisvogel” and also at “fabio’s”. They are now using this experience to introduce their guests to the culinary diversity of Vienna. The team in the kitchen is led by the talented chef Martina Pivonka, who previously worked in the Meixner kitchen.

The warm atmosphere and hospitality are also aspects that characterize Viennese gastronomy. The inns are not only responsible for physical well-being, but also for making contacts and social gatherings, as wien.info impressively describes. In “Meixners Gastwirtschaft” this tradition is lived and maintained.

The former operators, Karl and Berta Meixner, are now enjoying their retirement in Trieste, having handed the inn into the trustworthy hands of the Civics in 2022. Some of the traditional recipes from Berta Meixner's kitchen remain in place in order to preserve the restaurant's roots. “We have a good knack for the quality and presentation of the food,” emphasizes Alexander, giving an outlook on the future development of the inn.

“Meixners Gastwirtschaft” is now more than ever a place where Viennese cuisine is very important and where all generations get their money’s worth. Things never get boring here, and guests can look forward to an exciting mix of tradition and new creations.
