Toni Pfeffer turns 60: A football legend celebrates in Vienna!
A very special Sunday has begun in the Pfeffer house. Anton “Toni” Pfeffer, the legendary former professional footballer and audience favorite of Austria Vienna, is celebrating his 60th birthday today. Born in Lilienfeld in the picturesque Traisental, he began his football career at SV Türnitz before moving to the Austria second team in 1984. The talented player was discovered by Josef “Pepi” Argauer during his career and made his Bundesliga debut in 1985 at just 19 years old. His career highlight came when coach Karl Stotz gave him a regular place alongside Erich Obermayer in 1987.
The years passed and Pfeffer soon became an indispensable part of the team. By 1999, he had played 65 international matches for the ÖFB team and took part in two World Cups. His rustic playing style earned him the nickname “Rambo,” which made him a feared figure on the pitch. In the 1990s, Pfeffer enjoyed great popularity among Violet fans and was able to win seven titles in 13 years as a regular player. He ended his career in the summer of 2000 at the age of 35, with his last competitive game taking place on May 27, 2000 at the Tivoli in Innsbruck.
Life after football
But his time as a player was not the end for Toni Pfeffer. In 2001 he received the “Silver Medal of Honor of the State of Lower Austria” and was elected to the “Austria Century Eleven” in 2011. Although he briefly took over the reins as head coach of Wiener Austria, his tenure was short-lived. He then worked not only for the sports department of the state of Lower Austria, but also as a TV expert at Sky, where he was able to pass on his specialist knowledge. He opened a completely different chapter when he became active as a pop singer around the turn of the millennium and released three CDs.
Interest in Pfeffer's career has not waned over the years. He remains an unforgettable figure in Austrian football history and is celebrated by many as an icon today. It's no surprise that his legendary 1999 interview during a World Cup qualifier against Spain achieved cult status.
