Drama on Frommes Alpe: Baby thrown out of stroller!

A serious incident occurred in the idyllic setting of Tyrol on Monday afternoon: a 23-year-old mother from Germany lost control of her stroller on her way to Frommes Alpe in Fiss. At around 12:55 p.m., when she wanted to open a pasture gate, the car with her ten-week-old baby started moving unsecured and rolled about 50 meters downhill before overturning several times. Tragically, the baby was thrown from the car and landed on a mountain meadow, as Kurier reports.

The drama happened amidst the untouched nature of the Tyrolean Alps, where fresh air and breathtaking views cannot protect against accidents. Luckily, mountain rescuers from Fiss happened to be nearby and immediately provided first aid. Mom and baby were immediately brought to the valley and received initial care in the district hospital in Zams. The injured child then had to be flown by emergency helicopter to the Innsbruck University Hospital and suffered injuries of an indeterminate degree, as Heute reports.

Investigations and security in the mountains

The police have already started investigating the exact cause of the accident. Such an incident raises questions about safety and caution in alpine regions. Alpinesicherheit documents accidents in the mountains and is actively working on prevention work to avoid such incidents in the future. The Alpine police record all accidents in Austria's mountains in an extensive database, which also serves to improve Alpine safety.

Given the increased number of accidents in Alpine terrain, especially in the context of climate change, raising awareness of the dangers in the mountains is more important than ever. Last winter, over 6,700 people had accidents and unfortunately there were 111 deaths in the Austrian Alps. Statistics like these remind us to go out into nature carefully and prepared.

This incident in Fiss can serve as a clear wake-up call that even on seemingly harmless excursions into nature, the dangers should not be underestimated. The experiences there should always be associated with vigilance. The thoughts of the entire community are with the affected family and we hope for a speedy recovery for the little fighter.
