S-Bahn and U-Bahn in Vienna: Major construction site leads to diversions!

Vienna is facing major changes in local public transport: the S-Bahn line S45 will be partially closed in the coming weeks in order to carry out urgently needed maintenance and modernization work. Again ÖAMTC reported, the first phase of this closure will start from Hernals to Handelskai, which will last until June 12, 2025. A rail replacement service with buses ensures that travelers still get to their destination. Stops such as Vienna Hernals (Seitenberggasse, Czartoryskigasse) and Vienna Gersthof (Gersthofer Straße) are served.

The second phase of the closure will then follow from June 12th to June 23rd, affecting the Heiligenstadt to Handelskai section. Here too, replacement traffic is being used. Stops include Vienna Heiligenstadt (Rudolf-Gelbard-Gasse) and Vienna Handelskai (Engerthstraße).

Modernization of the Vienna lines

But the work is not just limited to the S45. The Vienna lines also put a clear focus on the U4 and the track renewals during the summer months. Between June 28th and September 1st, the U4 between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke will be closed. The reason: The tunnel infrastructure is now over 120 years old and needs extensive renovation.

To ease the burden on passengers, the U4 will continue to run between Heiligenstadt and Schottenring and between Hütteldorf and Schottenring during this period. For additional capacity, tram lines E4 and D are available to take people comfortably to Schottenring.

More construction sites and innovations

The modernization work is part of a larger offensive that the Vienna lines currently moving forward. In 2024, 223 million euros have already been invested in the infrastructure, on 100 construction sites. The result: 8.6 kilometers of tracks and 53 switches were replaced. By 2025, 11 kilometers of tracks and 45 new switches are to be added.

The focus is particularly on track work on Hütteldorfer Straße, Landstraßer Hauptstraße and Schlachthausgasse. Extensive renovation work is being carried out here, so some lines have to be rerouted or shortened. The Kagran subway station will also be modernized by the end of June, and the Tscherttegasse station will be renovated from May to December 2025.

Travelers can also look forward to new tram lines in autumn 2025: Line 12 will connect districts 8, 9, 20 and 2, while line 27 will run from Strebersdorf to the U2 station Aspern Nord. Line 18 will also be extended between the 2nd and 3rd districts.

Wiener Linien is working diligently to ensure the quality and reliability of local transport and to make the transport infrastructure fit for the future. These comprehensive modernizations are intended not only to increase driving comfort, but also to ensure the reliability of the entire system. We can't wait to see how the construction work will change mobility in Vienna.
