S-Bahn and subway in Vienna: Large construction site leads to diversions!

Kagran, Österreich - Vienna faces major changes in local public transport: The S-Bahn line S45 will be partially closed in the coming weeks in order to carry out urgently needed maintenance and modernization work. As the ÖAMTC , the first phase of this lock starts from Hernals to Handelskai, which will last until June 12, 2025. A rail replacement traffic by bus ensures that travelers still get to their destination. So stops such as Vienna Hernals (Seitberggasse, Czartoryskigasse) and Vienna Gersthof (Gersthofer Straße) are served.

From June 12th to June 23, the second phase of the lock will follow, in which the Heiligenstadt section to Handelskai is affected. Here too, replacement traffic is worked. Stops include Vienna Heiligenstadt (Rudolf-Gelbard-Gasse) and Vienna Handelskai (Engerthstraße).

modernization of the Viennese lines

But the work is not limited to the S45. The Wiener Linien also focus on the U4 and the track renewals during the summer months. Between June 28th and September 1st, the U4 between Schottenring and Friedensbrücke is closed. The reason: the tunnel infrastructure is now over 120 years old and requires comprehensive renovation.

To relieve passengers, the U4 will continue between Heiligenstadt and Schottenring and between Hütteldorf and Schottenring during this period. For additional capacities, the tram lines E4 and D are ready to bring people comfortably to the Schottenring.

other construction sites and innovations

The modernization work is part of a larger offensive that drive the Wiener lines . In 2024, 223 million euros have already been invested in the infrastructure, and that on 100 construction sites. The result: 8.6 kilometers of tracks and 53 course were renewed. For 2025, 11 kilometers of tracks and 45 new course should be added.

The focus is particularly on the track work on Hütteldorfer Straße, Landstraßer Hauptstraße and in Schlachhausgasse. Extensive renovation work is carried out here, so some lines have to be redirected or short -led. The Kagran subway station will also be modernized by the end of June, and the Tscherttegasse station will be renovated from May to December 2025.

The travelers can also look forward to new tram lines in autumn 2025: Line 12 will connect districts 8, 9, 20 and 2, while line 27 from Strebersdorf will lead to the U2 station Aspern Nord. Line 18 also receives an extension between the 2nd and 3rd district.

The Viennese lines are working purposefully to ensure the quality and reliability of local transport and to make the transport infrastructure fit for the future. With these comprehensive modernizations, not only is driving comfort increases, but also the reliability of the entire system is to be ensured. We can be excited to see how the construction work will change mobility in Vienna.
