Teenager fakes cell phone theft and ends up in jail!

A strange incident in the Döbling district of Vienna caused a stir when a 15-year-old made an emergency call about an alleged cell phone theft at around 8:45 p.m. on Whit Monday, June 9, 2025. Apparently the teenager had asked a passerby to call the police because his cell phone had been stolen. But as it turned out, the theft was probably just a hoax.

The whole thing took place in the Wertheimstein Park area. When the passerby called 911, a group of young people mocked him. As soon as the police officers from the emergency service turned the corner, the 15-year-old turned out to be uncooperative and aggressive. Not only did he refuse to provide his identity, he also tried to prevent officers from doing their work and slapped a police officer's hand away.

The arrest

The situation quickly escalated, ultimately leading to the teenager's arrest. During a search, police found a cell phone, indicating the alleged theft never occurred. The 15-year-old also behaved uncooperatively during the subsequent interrogation and refused to make any statements about the events. The Vienna public prosecutor's office reacted immediately and ordered the young man to be transferred to a prison.

The incidents, which unfolded in a seemingly harmless situation, raise questions about the behavior of young people today. “How can it be that young people do such nonsense?” asks one resident of the area, while another adds: “There is really something wrong when young people no longer know the consequences of their actions.”

Public reactions

There is great sympathy in the neighborhood. Some citizens are concerned about the incidents and general safety in the area. “It really bothers you when something like this happens on your own doorstep,” said a passer-by. At the same time, some are optimistic that this is an isolated case that should not tarnish the good neighbors.

Police point out that such incidents place a burden not only on officers but also on citizens as resources are tied up to investigate non-existent crimes. "Every police operation counts. We ask citizens to call the police in actual emergencies and not to act as a joke," said a press spokesman for the Hohen Warte police station.
