Vienna Spittelau: Three months of construction work - this is how you get around the closures!
The Viennese will have to prepare for a significant change in their public transport from March 2026. The Vienna Spittelau stop will be completely closed for over 100 days from March 6th to June 22nd, 2026. This reports oe24.at.
The background to the closure is the new construction of the station. The ÖBB has big plans: tracks and switches are being renewed, which should offer passengers more comfort and safety in the long term. A total of around 2.5 kilometers of new tracks will be laid between Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and Spittelau, while ten switches will be modernized at the same time.
Changes in the timetable
There will be the first changes to the timetable for passengers from December 14, 2025. The S40 and R40 lines will end in Heiligenstadt in the future. Both the Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and the Spittelau stop will then fall out of the railways' duty scope. However, the REX4 and REX41 continue to stop at Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof. If you have a ticket in the core area of Vienna, you can alternatively use tram line D and the subway line U4 in Vienna Heiligenstadt.
ÖBB recommends finding out about the new connections before traveling and recommends using the Scotty timetable information.
Renovation work at Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof
In addition to the work on the Spittelau station, the track hall ceiling at Franz Josefs Station will also be renovated. This will be carried out from January to the end of June 2026 and will take place in several stages. Platforms are repeatedly closed for construction work:
- 07.01. – 09.02.: Bahnsteige 1 und 2
- 09.02. – 06.03.: Bahnsteige 2 und 3
- 06.03. – 24.04.: Bahnsteige 3 und 4
- 04.05. – 22.06.: Bahnsteige 4 und 5
During these times, the pavement around the station will also be adjusted, with the new paths being signposted accordingly.
