School supplies for everyone: collection campaign in Leopoldstadt and Brigittenau!

An important school supplies collection campaign is currently underway in Leopoldstadt and Brigittenau. Well-preserved learning materials such as school bags, backpacks, snack boxes and other utensils will be collected until August 22nd. The aim of this initiative is to support families in financial difficulties before school starts by providing children with free school materials. The campaign is supported by various organizations, including the GB* district office and the Brigittenau district council, which act as collection points.

The donated school supplies will be distributed free of charge to eligible families on August 26th and 27th, 2025. On both days, parents and children can come to the Brigittenau district office (2nd floor, room 2.16) between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. and pick up what they need. The opening times of the collection points are flexible so that many have the opportunity to make their contribution.

Support for families in need

As the Caritas Vienna reports, starting school puts a huge financial burden on many low-income families. Before the Corona crisis, around 230,000 children in Austria were already struggling with the risk of poverty, but the situation has worsened even further since the pandemic measures. In Vienna, almost every fourth child is affected by poverty. Switching to a new school year can cost up to 300 euros, which is not affordable for many families.

To counteract this, 49 schools and almost 8,000 students have already taken part in the youngCaritas school collection campaign, in which 450 filled school bags were collected. This commitment is of great importance because education in Austria is strongly inherited and thus has a lasting influence on the chances of a better future.

Tackle together

The issues of poverty and social justice are not only important for adults, but also for young people. A project of youngCaritas encourages students to actively help and deal with these issues. The children bring school supplies in good condition, which are then picked up in the last week of school before the new school year.

The educational objective of this project is clear: to take responsibility and pay attention to the needs of low-income earners. Students from elementary schools take on the organization of the collection and thus help to improve the educational opportunities of their classmates.

For anyone who wants to help, this is an excellent opportunity to give their school supplies a second life and support families in their neighborhood. Every donation counts and makes a real difference during this challenging time.
