Firecracker alarm in Vienna: Pyrotechnics create a mini New Year's Eve atmosphere!
On the night of October 31st, an unpleasant spectacle occurred in Vienna: the streets shook with loud explosions, and bright flashes of light lit up the sky over Floridsdorf, Donaustadt and Brigittenau. Local residents described this scene as a “mini New Year’s Eve atmosphere” or even “like a war.” Many residents, especially in the residential areas, lived in constant fear of the rockets, firecrackers and batteries flying around that were set off by groups of young people. This is particularly problematic because many of the fireworks were detonated in close proximity to cars and house entrances. The Vienna police responded with increased presence, but despite the intensive controls, the situation remained tense. The police in Vienna simply recorded more reports on Halloween than on normal days, which indicates the growing problem with illegal pyrotechnics. As Heute reports, Halloween has increasingly become a challenge in some parts of the city, where the peace and quiet of residents is regularly disturbed.
In order to deal with this problem, the police are carrying out increased checks. This began on Thursday with an announcement from the Ministry of the Interior, which responded to the increasing complaints. The aim of the actions is to prevent the purchase and sale of banned pyrotechnic items, especially those imported from the nearby Czech Republic. These controls include not only the public road transport system, but also local public transport. The measures focus on the possession, transfer and use of pyrotechnics as well as compliance with the prohibitory provisions, as Kurier reports.
Additional security precautions
The police have not only increased their presence on the roads, but have also put special units on standby to prevent possible damage to property and dangerous situations. Especially in view of the approaching anniversary of the terrorist attack in Vienna on November 2nd, there is a lot of pressure on the security forces. The Ministry of the Interior urgently appeals to the population to refrain from using unauthorized pyrotechnics in order to ensure the safety of all citizens. It's a clear message: careful behavior can prevent many dangerous situations and accidents.
The fire brigades and the police therefore ask everyone to adhere to the applicable regulations. Improper handling of fireworks can pose a serious danger not only to the user but also to bystanders. In view of the repeated incidents during Halloween and All Saints' Day, these appeals are more important than ever to protect the night's sleep of the Viennese population.
It remains to be seen whether the security authorities' latest measures will be successful and whether peaceful nights will return to Vienna in the coming years. One thing is certain, however: the discussion about pyrotechnics and its regulations will also be on everyone's lips next Halloween.
