125 years of Brigittenau: festivities and new green oases for the anniversary!
In the heart of Vienna, the Brigittenau district, a very special anniversary is being celebrated this year: it is 125 years since the district was founded as an independent entity. This event is celebrated with a colorful program led by district leader Christine Dubrawatz-Widholm. The initiatives range from cultural highlights to citizen participation projects that are intended to strengthen cooperation in the district, such as crown reported.
The celebrations include concerts, readings as well as tours and special exhibitions in the district museum. In addition, a new, ten-hectare park will be opening shortly, which will significantly improve the quality of stay in Brigittenau. This green space planning is part of all construction projects in the district and complements the existing opportunities for local recreation offered by the two outdoor swimming pools and the banks of the Danube Canal. Free exercise offers are organized by schools and clubs that care about the well-being of all residents.
Cultural projects and civic engagement
There are exciting offers for the younger generation, such as the free summer stations with tutoring and the activities of the student parliament, which implement their own projects in the summer. A new biodiversity project on Jägerstrasse also shows how environmentally conscious and active the district can be. Citizen participation is very important here: Graezel meetings and neighborhood projects promote exchange and participation. In this context, the first participation process for the redesign of a park is being planned for 2025.
But the history of Brigittenau is diverse. Originally separated from Leopoldstadt in 1903, the district developed from an industrial area into a lively residential district with an increasing number of jobs. To demonstrate this development, Matthäus Häupl launched an exciting photo project called “Photographics”. It combines old photos of the district with current events in order to bring the eventful history closer to the population MyDistrict reported.
An invitation to participate
Häupl is calling on citizens to get involved: they are looking for old photos, especially of striking places such as the Wallenstein cinema and the old police station in Burghardtgasse. These recordings will be digitized and returned to the owners. A traveling exhibition will travel through the district to further illustrate the diversity of history.
The people of Brigittenau not only have a view of their past, but also of their future. Thanks to diverse citizen participation, it is ensured that the voices of residents are heard in order to continue to make the district attractive and worth living in. The commitment of seniors through the Seniors' Parliament and the mobile consultation hours of district leader Dubrawatz-Widholm show that all generations are involved in the development.
Brigittenau does not stand still, but is actively developing. As part of urban development, the district is an example of how citizens are involved in planning processes through participation in order to create quality of life.
