Albertina Modern: Hirst's drawings await visitors in Vienna!

Another highlight of the Viennese art scene is the Albertina Modern, which opened in 2020 in the historic Künstlerhaus on Karlsplatz. With a generous area of approximately 2,000 square meters, this museum presents a remarkable collection of around 60,000 works of art. The impressive exhibits include not only international greats such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, but also local legends such as Friedensreich Hundertwasser and Gottfried Helnwein.

The Künstlerhaus, which was once a meeting place for the Viennese avant-garde in the 19th century, has been transformed into a modern art museum after extensive renovation. The Albertina Modern is a branch of the renowned Albertina Museum and offers new exhibitions by local and international artists every year. With a focus on contemporary, modern and postmodern art, the works of around 5,000 artists are gathered here.

Damien Hirst: A look at drawing

The Albertina Modern is currently delighting visitors with an extensive exhibition by the British artist Damien Hirst, which can be seen until October 12, 2025. This exhibition is special because it puts the contemporary master's drawings in the spotlight - a first in Vienna. Hirst, famous for his paintings and sculptures, shows drawings and sketches here that have been created since the 1980s. Many of these works served as preparation for his most famous works.

The focus of the exhibition is on Hirst's conceptual approach to drawing, which he considers to be as important as the completed works of art. An absolute highlight are the drawings from his project “Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable”, which cleverly blurs the boundaries between reality and fiction and thus questions the credibility of art.

Viennese art diversity

Vienna doesn't just have the Albertina Modern to offer - the city is a true mecca for art lovers. The Vienna museums present an outstanding range of art collections ranging from antiquity to modern art. In the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna (KHM) you can see masterpieces by artists such as Albrecht Dürer and Gustav Klimt. The Belvedere Museum, known for Klimt's famous “The Kiss”, also attracts numerous visitors.

The list goes on: from the Imperial Treasury with its historical insignia to the Kunsthalle Wien, which shows international contemporary art projects, there is something for every taste. For the best insights into the Viennese art scene, it is worth visiting the Albertina Modern so as not to miss the current and upcoming exhibitions such as "Moving Images. Vasarely - Adrian", which starts on November 5, 2025.

The Albertina Modern, open all year round and centrally located near the Naschmarkt and the opera, remains a cultural hotspot and an important piece of Viennese art. No matter whether you want to enjoy insights into the fascinating works of Damien Hirst or the annual new exhibitions - there is always something happening here!
