Halloween nightmare: armed attack on a Viennese couple!
On November 1st, 2025, the city of Vienna will have to deal with a shocking incident that took place on the night of Halloween, October 31st. A couple from Vienna-Hitzing was attacked in their apartment by two armed burglars. At midnight, while many people were still busy celebrating and decorating their houses, the perpetrators rang the doorbell and uttered a typical Halloween saying. What seemed like a harmless greeting that evening quickly turned into a threatening situation.
When the couple opened the door, the burglars forced their way into the apartment with a gun. The victims were tied up while the perpetrators searched the apartment for valuables. Such tragic incidents cast a shadow over the most joyful Halloween, celebrated worldwide on October 31st. The evening marks the eve of All Saints' Day, a day dedicated to the deceased and deeply rooted in the traditions of many cultures. Halloween is increasingly associated not only with spooky costumes and celebratory parades, but also with safety issues.
Burglaries in Carinthia
However, this incident in Vienna is not the only one. In neighboring Carinthia there were also several break-ins into single-family homes while the owners were away. In the St. Veit an der Glan district in particular, patio doors were smashed in three cases. In one case, the patio door wasn't even locked, which made it easier for the perpetrators. Cash amounting to several thousand euros was stolen during a break-in in Brückl, while valuable collector's coins were stolen in Althofen. Two break-ins were also reported in Arnoldstein in the Villach-Land district, in which cash and a small safe were missing. The police cannot currently rule out that these crimes are related.
So the festive spirit of Halloween is overshadowed by worrying safety issues. Historically associated with remembering the dead, many Halloween traditions originated in Celtic harvest festivals and were brought to North America by immigrants. Today, people around the world enjoy dressing up, pumping pumpkins, and trick-or-treating at various celebrations, most often to collect candy. But as darkness falls, perhaps it's time to think not only about holiday traditions, but also about the safety of your own home.
So Halloween is not only fun, but also brings with it a certain responsibility that should be taken into account more than ever before. In light of recent events, both revelers and authorities must remain vigilant to ensure that the Night of the Ghosts does not become a night of terror.
